While some observers are optimistic about China's economy, the economies of some Asian nations are showing signs of cooling. In addition, increased trade fractions threaten to exacerbate this situation, and a recent regionalism movement lends evidence to protectionism as a likely reaction to international trade imbalances.The Ministry on International Trade and Industry's report on international trade provides a look at the major developments in macroeconomic issues and trade policy, first world-wide and then region-by-region. The first of two major sections provides a focus on overall world trade, with a stress on the growing Asia Pacific Region, and also covers recent trends in Japan's trade statistics for 1997, including trade by import and export commodities as well as trade by region and country. The overall objective of this report is to facilitate a common international perception and understanding of the global economy. The authors anticipate that the report will provide trade policy practitioners worldwide with a sound information base for international policy cooperation.
