Book excerpt: Memoirs of a Jew born in 1926 in Berlin to an Orthodox family. After the "Kristallnacht" pogrom in 1938, Dzialoszynski and her four siblings fled to the Netherlands, where they were eventually joined by their parents. In May 1940 they were interned in Westerbork, where they made every effort to maintain religious practices. In January 1944 they were sent to Theresienstadt, and shortly afterwards to Auschwitz, where her parents and two of her brothers were killed. Dzialoszynski was sent to Gross-Rosen, and then on a death march to Bergen-Belsen, where she was liberated. After the war she discovered that one sister and one brother, who were twins, had survived. She married Avraham Dzialoszynski, whose account of his escape from Vichy France to Switzerland and his stay there are included on pp. 197-234. The Dzialoszynskis, with their 13 children, lived in Basel for 43 years; they moved to Israel in 1994.
