Book excerpt: In the summer of 1917, following the U.S. entry into the Great War that erupted in Europe in 1914, volunteers from every state, led by the Red Cross, stepped up to knit more than 15 million pounds of wool into socks, sweaters, hats, and bandages for our soldiers and allies overseas. In less than two years, women, men, and the nation's school children knit and purled more than 24 million articles and prepared more than 300 million surgical dressings for U.S. soldiers and allies overseas. The Navy League Comforts Committee added to these unprecedented efforts, along with other voluntary organizations and individuals. These are the Knitting Brigades of World War 1, volunteer knitters in cities and towns across the U.S., who helped Americans understand who we could be together to unify the nation and support the war effort abroad. This is their story, a proud heritage shared through vintage photographs.
