Book excerpt: In this report gross lithologic characteristics and facies variations of the subsurface Cambrian and Ordovician formations of northeastern Illinois are considered. Distinguishing criteria which permit more uniform recognition and separation of the formations are evaluated. Northeastern Illinois is the most densely populated and heavily industrialized portion of the state. The deeper bedrock formations are of major interest as ground water sources and as reservoirs for storage of natural gas in this region. Several hundreds of deep wells have been drilled to furnish water for municipalities and industrial organizations. Although northeastern Illinois is in a favorable position for development of ground water supplies, the rapid expansion of population and industrialization of the region has caused a steady decline in artesian pressure of water from the deep formations ... There is need for additional structures suitable for underground gas storage. Precise determination of the stratigraphic sequence is required for evaluation of ground water productivity and recharge problems. The correct anticipation of many engineering problems, such as water well drilling and completion, casing and pump setting, and caving zones is also based on reliable estimates of stratigraphic positions and an understanding of the types of lithologic variation which are likely to be encountered.
