Book excerpt: Resurrection of Black manhood is a coming of age autobiography about an African-American boys journey from childHOOD to manHOOD. The story is told in three stages taking the reader on a journey through the eyes of a Black child From childHOOD to boyHOOD, which takes a look into social structures and imagery that exacerbates the self-loathing in our black boys. This journey also takes an in-depth look into my early life and how so many young black male children are mis-educated into thinking that they are less than human and how they feel the need to do whatever it takes to be recognized as human. The second part of the journey from boyHOOD to maleHOOD is a critical time where the African-American male psyche is challenged by hormonal and physical changes. It's a time where the body and physical desires begin to take over where rational thinking should rule the day. This is also a time where many Black boys have a tendency to act out, a time where the boy first thinks he is a man and does or tries to emulate what he thinks are rituals of Black manhood. The final book will take a critical and introspective look into ideals and ideas surrounding Black maleness and Black manhood. Hip-hop culture, urban life, African-American culture, spirituality, racism, fatherhood, classism, sexism, and ideology/politics will be explored as I lead you down the path that re-awakened the Black manHOOD within me. After embarking on this journey as I moved from maleHOOD to manHOOD, you will prayerfully understand how these three volumes will guide you into a better understanding of the African-American male psyche and the psychic trauma that many males face growing up, or growing down, in America today.
