Book excerpt: OTHO THE GREATis a play written by John Keats in 1819, in collaboration with his friend Charles Brown, who planned its construction. Brown could claim a half-right in Keats's longest work, intended for Edmund Kean at Drury Lane in London. Keats was convinced that this play would have made both his name and a tidy sum if it was ever performed. OTHO THE GREAT was never performed in Keats' lifetime and rarely if ever since. This historical drama is written in exact iambic pentameter, more exact than the verse that appears so frequently in the plays of William Shakespeare. It is based on the life of Otto I (November 23, 912 - May 7, 973), also known as Otto the Great. He was a German king from 936 and emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from 962 until his death in 973. The oldest son of Henry I the Fowler and Matilda, Otto was the first of the Germans to be called the emperor of Italy.
