Book excerpt: Excerpt from Official Army Register for January, 1876 In the column Brevet commissions and volunteer service, officers are credited with the highest brevet rank only held by them in the volunteer service. This mark [t] denotes a voluntary transfer, which is the cause of the anomalous position of the officer in his regiment or corps. In the column Appointed from, the initials M. A. Denote that the officer is a graduate of the Military Academy. Errors or omissions, if any, as to names, dates of commission, dates of first appointment, or of muster into service or of discharge, State where born, or from which appointed, will be immediately reported to the Adjutant General by the officers concerned. The letters following the names of battles in the mster of cavalry and artillery regiments indicate the companies engaged; where no letters appear, the whole regiment was engaged. The consolidation of the infantry regiments makes it inexpedient to announce the companies engaged. In some battles the whole regiment took part; in others, but a portion of the regiment.
