Book excerpt: The leader of the pro-gun movement in America has killed a leader of the anti-gun group on stage during a nationally televised debate and then turned the gun on himself before millions. Following that event and chaotic shootings at schools, churches and public events nationwide, the President has ordered a national referendum to recall the Second Amendment. A well-known pro-gun enthusiast (John Hatch) realizes there is something much deeper going on and contacts the leader of the anti-guns (Milburn Grayson). They form an unwitting alliance as they find out that the shootings are being caused by some kind of mind control. Both know that repeal of the Second Amendment could put the nation in deadly peril and that they have precious little time to solve the mystery before the national vote. As they investigate, unknown forces make numerous attempts on their lives. Unknown to Hatch and Grayson, a wealthy industrialist from Grayson's past and a shadow figure from Hatch's military days are the leaders of a secret movement. A series of violent confrontations between the two groups leads to a surprise conclusion. The story speaks to the issue of America's vulnerabilities to subversives, addresses the gun control issue, the age of computers and begs the question.... Who is "Minding America"?
