Book excerpt: Special agent Rebecca Miller was injured while she sat free a young woman. Despite her pain, she soon returned to work, believing the kidnap connected with a previous serial murder. Her physical pain was only overcome by her mental pain when she returned home in the evening and found her daughter's bed empty. In desperation, she notified her partner and the police, but they did not find Martha. Rebecca suspected the mysterious kidnapper may have something to do with her daughter's disappearance, though she had nothing to confirm it but her intuition. No matter how hard Peter Benett tried to keep his companion away from the investigation, he was forced to notify Rebecca when he was alerted in one of the parks in the quiet little town. The lifeless young female body lay among the bushes, covering her eyes with her hands, at least at first glance. Peter knew that her hands only covered her empty eye sockets. Rebecca was increasingly sure that they would face a serial killer, and she had to solve the case because only it could lead her to Martha. No one believed her. But she was sure.
