Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty-Seventh Annual Report of the Trustees of the Massachusetts General Hospital, 1870 The members of the Young Men's Christian Union of this city have provided dramatic representations and other entertainments for such of the patients as have been able to attend them. These exhibitions, etc., have afforded much gratification, as a relief and a change of mental occupation for many inmates of the Hospital. On April 15, $200 were appropriated to be expend ed by the lady volunteer visitors for the purchase of pictures for the wards of the Hospital. On June 3, these visitors were authorized to visit the male wards at their discretion - to bring flowers to patients, to read to them, and to write for them.
