D. 1691-1717 While one section of the community of Glasgow, including a majority of those who ruled municipal affairs, were at least passively favourable to the Union, the main body of the people, with the city ministers on their side, regarded it as dangerous alike to civil liberty and religion, and the more violent of their number expressed their displeasure by attacking the persons and property of all who were thought to be in any way implicated in its promotion. Under rules for keeping the peace, adopted by the town council on 18th November, 1706 (pp. 399 and measures taken by the authorities in Edinburgh, the turbulent people seem to have been effectively dealt with and further disorder was promptly suppressed.
