Book excerpt: Within a spatial competitive framework decision makers of services face the question what is the optimal point in time to open or close a facility location under probabilistic demand? Although this question has a long term tradition in human geography it is still difficult to answer since demand is usually not monotonic and often there are spatial substitution patterns between facilities. This book presents a location planning approach which considers the availability of service locations to customers and the allocation of demand according to utility-maximization and substitution patterns.
