Book excerpt: Excerpt from Course of Experiments in Physical Measurement, Vol. 4 of 4: Appendix for the Use of Teachers The first requisite for a course in elementary Physical Measurement is a well lighted and uniformly heated room, with the ordinary precautions to secure good ventilation. Experience has shown that these advantages cannot practically be obtained in basements, however suitable the latter may be for certain scientific purposes. The first floor of a building, properly supported by brick pillars to prevent vibration, has undoubted advantages for a course of measurements. The use of iron in construction should be in so far as possible avoided on account of its magnetic influence. If the room above a physical laboratory is to be occupied, there should be an empty space between the floor of that room and the laboratory ceiling.
