They protect him from the others and occupy the spaces left by the electricity. Dr. Grudzien waits in the shadows of ASH, a faceless person that everyone fears. Any resident Grudzien takes disappears permanently, but nobody wonders about it, because in ASH, you don’t wonder. Jacob’s life devolves into waiting for the rest of his memories to be stolen from him. His last memory of Charlie is fading.
