The purpose of the project was to ascertain the characteristics of an effective pastor in order to develop a role model that might be used by inexperienced pastors in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church today. The study was conducted among pastors in the Tulsa District of the CME Church. The Delphi Technique was the vehicle used to ascertain the characteristics found in successful pastors. Three rounds were used to gather a consensus. On the first round information was gathered and the responses categorized. In the second round the participants were asked to rank their responses in level of importance. In the third round responses were ranked based on most to least importance. Findings and conclusions. In the final analysis, ten areas were identified as characteristics that pastors might consider seeking divine guidance for implementation. The characteristics fall in the category of personal development and spiritual matters. Pastors must have a close relationship with God, which allows them to see themselves and their shortcomings. In conclusion this research of Scripture, related literature and findings revealed by the survey has successfully focused on areas that will help an ineffective pastor develop certain characteristics essential to become successful as a pastor. Effective pastors must integrate and balance their characteristics and faith into their ministry. Effective pastors must have a continual growth and development of their character. Because of the limitations of the project, it is recommended that the project be broadened to include a greater number of participants across the CME Church"--Abstract.
