Book excerpt: The Anne Unger Greenberg Papers on Gene Kelly contains correspondence, programs and newspaper clippings documenting Gene Kelly’s early career as a dance instructor in Pittsburgh in the 1930s, as well as efforts by local groups in the 1970s and 1980s to memorialize Kelly’s connections to Pittsburgh. The correspondence includes short notes and Christmas cards sent from Kelly to Greenberg from the late 1960s to the 1990s. The programs cover recitals at studios in Pittsburgh before Kelly became associated with Beth Shalom, programs from his kermesses at Beth Shalom, and programs from the Gene Kelly Studio of the Dance. A folder documents an effort by the East Liberty Chamber of Commerce in 1986 and 1987 to celebrate Kelly’s connection to the neighborhood, culminating in a reunion of his students and the renaming of a block in his honor. There is also a program from a 1977 production of “The Story of Gene Kelly: A Musical Fantasy” at St. Raphael Elementary School, which Kelly attended as a child.
