Book excerpt: Wireless sensor networks consist of a large number of low power devices equipped with RF links for communication that have numerous military, civil and environmental monitoring applications. The energy constraints due to limited battery power present several design challenges. In this thesis we propose a cluster based framework and a localized and deterministic schedule based on TDMA/FDMA MAC protocol for the nodes in a neighborhood to communicate with each other. We also present a three phase collaboration algorithm that entails exchanging messages to determine the local maximum in a region in terms of received energy from the source. This helps in minimizing the redundancy in reporting events and saves energy. We also introduce a robust data aggregation approach for queries targeting selective regions of the network. Extensive simulations show that there is a significant reduction in the overall network traffic and in the energy expended by the nodes.
