Book excerpt: The investigation was conducted by the Research Directorate of the Weapons Laboratory at Rock Island under an In-House Laboratory Independent Research Project. The purpose of the investigation was to analytically study the thermal radiation heat transfer inside gun tubes. A simplified physical model was used in the analysis. With this model, the steady turbulent flow of an optically thick gray gas in the gun tube was considered. Both developing and fully developed turbulent flow were considered. A mathematical model was derived and programmed for numerical evaluation. The numerical results were plotted in dimensionless form so that they could be used to estimate the radiation heat transfer in any gun tube for which the propellant gas flow conditions are known.
