Book excerpt: The Internet of things (IoT) and big data describe the movement of many industries toward a focus on data collection, communication and analysis. Tools such as radio frequency identification (RFID) are leveraged in order to maximize the potential benefits gained from the IoT and big data, connecting devices to one another and providing end users meaningful ways to interact with technology. The healthcare industry has revolutionized its approach to the IoT, with hopes of realizing cost savings, increasing efficiencies and improving quality of care. Navy medicine has a history of big data initiatives, and in the future could include even more intersection between technology and healthcare. In the adoption of new technologies, resistance to technology change is a possibility. The type and strength of resistance and its mediation is largely dependent on how leaders approach resistance and acceptance among end users. The introduction of new RFID technologies has the potential to positively impact processes such as surgical tool sterilization and patient and employee tracking. Moving into the future, the integration between healthcare and technology continues to develop at a rapid pace, and the IoT, big data and RFID technology should play an important role in the healthcare industry.
