This perspective has abruptly changed over the first decade of the 21st century when significant offshore natural gas resources were found in Israeli Economic Zone. The discovery is estimated to provide Israel with 100% of its energy demand over the next decades and leave enough of the gas for export. This fact has diverse implications for the country, starting from the impact that the natural gas will have on the Israeli economy and finishing on the geopolitical position of the country in the region, given its full energy independence. The thesis focuses on these dimensions: it firstly analyses the Israeli readiness to face the infamous resource curse to then investigate the implications that the natural gas discoveries will have for the economy, internal affairs and international relations with the countries from the Middle East and beyond this region.
