Book excerpt: This study is an inquiry into the foundations of epistemology and ethics. It traces the relations between fact and value, truth and value, fact and theory - historically and systematically. The overall conclusion is that philosophy has never got beyond the Kantian paradigm though there have been interesting developments within it. It is also suggested that much thinking in ethics is over-preoccupied with grouping ethics in need-orientated attachment and would benefit from a consideration of the role of detachment.
