Book excerpt: In a unique fly-fishing book, Waite angles for what ultimate truths about fly-fishing he can catch. He lands some, but perhaps the most interesting is that there are no ultimate truths about the sport. For instance, tackle manufacturers all seem to go off on their own: while one says a rod is a number 7, another says its apparent number 7 is something different. Consider the facts that not all number 12 hooks are the same, that lines all differ, and that the $250 rod you just purchased in a high-end fly-fishing store costs $79.99 at the local sporting goods discounter, and you get an idea of Waite's method throughout. His unscientific survey of fly-fishers is pretty interesting, too, if only to find out how everybody else fishes. You wind up hoping Waite will some day expand his scope to survey fishers for largemouth bass, muskies, walleye, panfish, and just about any other critter that swims in fresh-or saltwater. Now that would be interesting. - Jon Kartman; 290p-
