Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monitoring hemodynamics in the operating room to determine patient status has been standard practice for nearly forty years. Thermodilution using the pulmonary artery catheter (PAC) has been the gold standard by which hemodynamics have been measured since its inception. Limitations and the potential for adverse patient outcomes have led to research studies questioning the efficacy, cost-effectiveness, and risk-benefit of continued PAC use. The development of less invasive hemodynamic monitoring technologies in order to avoid the inherent limitations and disadvantages of pulmonary artery catheter use is emerging. Many less invasive and noninvasive hemodynamic monitoring options are currently available. An extensive comparison of advantages, limitations, and clinical validation of each of these alternative methods is analyzed to evaluate the efficacy and validation agains hemodynamic variables calculated using the PAC. -- from the abstract.
