Urinary tract infections are the number one problem for the elderly in long term care facilities. Research evidence supports improved infection control as the most effective form of treatment rather than antibiotic use, however antibiotic treatment continues and is on the rise creating antibiotic resistance, increased costs and resources or hospitalizations. By searching urinary tract infections in elderly living in long term care facilities or nursing homes, antibiotic use in elderly as well as signs and symptoms in elderly with urinary tract infections is how evidence was obtained for this proposal. It is in the best interest for quality patient care to re-educate staff in the process of infection control to decrease the risk of urinary tract infections. This proposal will include a description of the problem a description of the solution an implementation plan, an evaluation plan, dissemination plan, review of literature as well as educational material for health care staff for improved infection control in long term care facilities.
