Book excerpt: Some have made the claim that while Joyce is clearly a modernist, his penchant for taking modernism to its limits makes him a kind of herald for the post-modern movement. In other words, Joyce's extreme modernism is the foundation for post-modernism and all that it stands for. While it is accurate that some of Joyce's writing elements in novels like Ulysses and later on Finnegan's Wake certainly show some characteristics that post-modern writers would later adopt such as the refusal to follow any previously established style, it would be a mistake to ever classify any of the work of Joyce as postmodern. Joyce's writing and indeed his deeper philosophical leanings align firmly with naturalism and modernism. Joyce's celebration of life and the mundane plant him firmly in the modernism and naturalist movements, not post-modernist.
