Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charlestown Navy Yard, 1890-1973 In April 1973, the Department of Defense announced the closing of the then 173 - year-old facility known successively as the Charlestown Navy Yard, the Boston Navy Yard, and the Boston Naval Shipyard. Except for the overhaul of the historic frigate Constitution, all industrial operations ceased as of December 31, 1973, and the Navy officially and formally disestablished the yard in ceremonies on July 1, 1974. The following October, Congress created the Boston National Historical Park, under the management of the National Park Service and consisting of numerous historic sites, including the western third of the Boston Navy Yard.
