Book excerpt: 'The Brown Owl', A Fairy Story, is a whimsical fairy tale written by an 18 year old lad named 'Ford H. Madox Hueffer'. This is his first book, published in 1891, however, the author would go on to publish over 80 books, many under the name he changed to in 1919, Ford Madox Ford. As in many fairy tales, Hueffer has created a love story between a beautiful princess and handsome prince, along with the pre-requisite villain who attempts to keep them apart while plotting to steal power. The magic lies in 'the Brown Owl', who watches over and protects the princess. Although there are no chapter breaks, this is a charming first book. It is definitely written with children in mind, yet 'The Brown Owl' is also enjoyed by adults... Ford Madox Ford (born Ford Hermann Hueffer ( 17 December 1873 - 26 June 1939) was an English novelist, poet, critic and editor whose journals, The English Review and The Transatlantic Review, were instrumental in the development of early 20th-century English literature.Ford is now remembered for his novels The Good Soldier (1915), the Parade's End tetralogy (1924-28) and The Fifth Queen trilogy (1906-08). The Good Soldier is frequently included among the great literature of the 20th century, including the Modern Library 100 Best Novels, The Observer's "100 Greatest Novels of All Time," and The Guardian's "1000 novels everyone must read."Early lifeFord was born in Wimbledon in London, to Catherine Madox Brown and Francis Hueffer, the eldest of three; his brother was Oliver Madox Hueffer. Ford's father, who became music critic for The Times, was German and his mother English. His paternal grandfather Johann Hermann Hüffer was first to publish Westphalian poet and author Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. He was named after his maternal grandfather, the Pre-Raphaelite painter Ford Madox Brown, whose biography he would eventually write. In 1889, after the death of his father, Ford and Oliver went to live with their grandfather in London. Ford graduated from the University College School in London, but never attended university...Ford Madox Brown (16 April 1821 - 6 October 1893) was a French-born British painter of moral and historical subjects, notable for his distinctively graphic and often Hogarthian version of the Pre-Raphaelite style. Arguably, his most notable painting was Work (1852-1865). Brown spent the latter years of his life painting the twelve works known as The Manchester Murals, depicting Mancunian history, for Manchester Town Hall.
