Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to assist the Army in identifying and developing potential improvements in nap-of-the-earth (NOE) training at the entry and unit levels. To accomplish this purpose, statements of NOE training objectives were derived, based on a detailed analysis of mission requirements and aircrew tasks, and the most promising methods of improving training to meet those objectives were identified. Part I of this study, published as an ARI Research Report, describes the technical approach and methods of the study, the results obtained, and the conclusions and recommendations. As part of the project, a detailed analysis of the functions and tasks required of Army helicopter crews in NOE operations was performed to provide the essential data base for identifying training requirements, and these detailed task descriptions were analyzed to derive specifications of the training objectives that would have to be met to achieve aircrew proficiency in NOE operations. The results are documented in Part II of the study.
